In 2019 the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution launched the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme. The main intention of introducing this scheme is to provide ration products like wheat, rice, sugar and other food grains at a subsidy price to the eligible ration card holders anywhere in the country.  The restriction to collect the ration from designated Public Distribution System (PDS) shops is now relaxed and people, especially migrant workers who flee to other places in search of work, are at benefit with this scheme.

The scheme has become operational nationally and all the States and UTs have implemented the scheme already. With the purpose that no poor should be deprived of getting the rightful food grains from the government under the food security scheme, the Union Government has taken this decision. Also, this eliminates fraud and corruption to a great extent. The government also introduced this scheme with an intent to rank high in Global Hunger Index by reducing the hunger deaths.
